What does the salary calculator calculate?

The salary calculator is an online tool that calculates gross and net salary according to Bulgarian tax rates and social security contributions for 2025. The calculator shows the net salary "in hand" after all deductions (income tax, health insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance), the total cost for the employer (gross salary + employer contributions), and a detailed breakdown of all deductions. The calculator is useful for employees who want to understand how their salary is calculated, for employers who need to calculate the total cost of employment, and for anyone planning their budget or negotiating salary. It helps you make informed decisions about employment and understand the real cost and value of your salary.

How to use the salary calculator?

When to use the salary calculator

This calculator is for people on employment contracts or employers who want to quickly see net salary, total cost for the employer, and all deductions (от 2026-01-01).

Step by step:

  1. Select the calculation type – "Gross → Net" or "Net → Gross".
  2. Enter the salary amount in the field.
  3. Select year and income type (salary, fee, etc., if you have such an option).
  4. If applicable, add children, disability status, additional health insurance, and other deductions.
  5. Click "Calculate" and wait for the result.

What the results show:

  • Net salary "in hand" – this is the amount you will receive after all deductions
  • Total cost for the employer – the total amount the employer pays (gross salary + employer contributions)
  • Income tax – calculated tax on income (10%)
  • Social security contributions – detailed breakdown of social and health insurance

Common mistakes:

  • Entering net instead of gross salary (or vice versa) – be careful to select the correct calculation mode
  • Comparing results with a payslip that includes bonuses or deductions – the calculator does not account for advances, vouchers, bonuses, or other additional payments that may appear on the official payslip
  • Forgetting deductions – don't forget to add children, disability status, and other deductions if they apply to you

Example with specific numbers

Example: Gross salary of 2,000 BGN for 2025, without children or other deductions

  • Gross salary: 2,000 BGN
  • Income tax (10%): 200 BGN
  • Health insurance (employee, 3.2%): 64 BGN
  • Pension insurance (employee, 7.8%): 156 BGN
  • Additional pension insurance (employee, 2.2%): 44 BGN
  • Unemployment (employee, 0.4%): 8 BGN
  • Net salary: ~1,528 BGN (2,000 - 200 - 64 - 156 - 44 - 8)
  • Total cost for employer: ~2,476 BGN (gross + employer contributions)

Sources and notes

The calculator uses current rates and limits (от 2026-01-01), established by the Income Tax Act, the Social Security Act, and NAP regulations. Income tax is 10% with an annual limit for taxation. Social security contributions have established minimum and maximum insurance incomes. For accurate calculations in specific situations (children, disabilities, additional income), always consult with an accountant or NAP.

Salary calculator — FAQ

Accordion answers; the same Q&A is in structured data for search engines.

Gross salary is the contracted amount before deductions. Net salary is take-home pay after personal income tax on taxable income and employee social security contributions (health, pension, unemployment, etc., depending on the case). The employer also pays employer contributions on top—this is separate from net pay.
