The BGN-EUR Calculator for Merchants is an online tool specifically designed for merchants and businesses working during the transition period from Bulgarian lev to euro, which begins on January 1, 2026. The calculator helps you quickly calculate change in euros when a customer pays with a mixed payment - part in BGN and part in EUR. The calculator automatically converts BGN to EUR at the official fixed exchange rate (1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN) and calculates the exact change that must be returned to the customer only in euros. This tool is essential for merchants who need to handle mixed payments correctly and comply with the regulations during the transition period.
Using the calculator is very simple. Follow these steps:
From January 1, 2026, Bulgaria enters a transition period during which Bulgarian lev and euro will be in parallel circulation. This means that customers can pay in both BGN and EUR, and merchants must return change only in euros. This calculator automatically converts BGN to EUR at the official fixed rate 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN and calculates the exact change to return. New: You can now choose to view the change and total amounts in both euros and leva, which is especially useful for daily reports and accounting purposes.
The calculator uses the official fixed exchange rate established by the European Council: 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN. All BGN received from the customer are automatically converted to EUR at this rate, then added to the paid EUR to calculate the total paid amount. Finally, the total amount to pay is subtracted and the change that must be returned to the customer only in euros is obtained.
Situation: Customer needs to pay 100 €, but pays 50 BGN and 50 €.
Calculation:
Yes, the calculator allows you to choose between displaying the change in euros (EUR) or in leva (BGN). This is useful for daily reports, where you need to calculate the total in the selected currency. All calculations are performed automatically with the correct conversion.
During the transition period, change is returned only in euros, according to the regulations of the BNB and the European Central Bank. However, the calculator allows you to view the total amount in leva as well, which is useful for accounting purposes and daily reports.
Yes, you can pay only in BGN. The calculator will convert the entire amount to euros and calculate the change in euros.
Yes, of course. If you pay only in EUR, simply leave the BGN field empty and enter the amount in the EUR field.
The calculator uses the official fixed exchange rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN, established by the European Council for the transition period starting January 1, 2026. This rate will not change throughout the transition period. During the transition period, change is returned only in euros, according to the regulations of BNB and the European Central Bank. The calculator automatically performs all conversions with high precision, showing results rounded to the second decimal place as required for currency operations. For specific questions or complex cases, we recommend consulting with a bank, accountant, or BNB.
