An aggregate summarizes rows into a value. COUNT(*) counts rows; COUNT(column) counts non-NULL values. COUNT returns 0 for an empty input. COUNT(DISTINCT column) counts distinct non-NULL values.
Small example:
SELECT COUNT(*) AS customers_count FROM customers;
